Expat Women Salaries in Saudi Arabia

Most females who come via family visa find it hard to get a job in their fields of interest. This is not the same story for our sisters who come to Saudi Arabia via a work visa. Nevertheless, if you are coming on a work visa, you should know the current salary trends of the area before moving.

Given that this country is very conservative, there are not many career options for women. Opportunities are usually available to women in the following sectors:

-Education
-Healthcare
-Hospitality/housekeeping

Now let us get to the salaries. Salaries will vary depending on your nationality (for some institutions or companies), level of education, and/or experience.

What should you expect in the education sector?

If you are a teacher, you should expect something between 1500 and 3200 USD per month. The following will determine how much you could end up getting.

  1. Nationality: If you are a native English language speaker or have achieved native-level proficiency, then you are on the right path.
  2. Qualification: For mathematics, the basic sciences, and computer sciences, a Master's degree in the corresponding field would increase your chances of hitting a higher pay. For English language teachers, a Bachelor's degree in English language, Journalism, Mass Communication or Linguistics are very essential. Other certificates such as ESL, TEFL, TESL, EFL, CELTA, DELTA or TESOL attract many employers. A Master's or PhD in English is an asset.
  3. Experience: Candidates who have 2 years or more teaching experience are usually preferred. Those who have also had experience teaching at a university have an added advantage.
As an aside, some international schools hire women without teaching experience. The salary will vary from one school to another and according to the qualification of the individual. There are some international schools in Jeddah for example, which hire female doctors, engineers, technicians, and nurses to teach children of different ages and levels. Usually, teachers without a university degree will get something between 530 and 665 USD monthly. Those with a university degree will get between 800 and 1500 USD monthly. Coordinators usually get a little more than this.

And what about our white-clad sisters in the health sector?

Here too, salaries will vary depending on the health institution. Female general practitioners (G.Ps) working for the Saudi government get a basic salary of about 1066 USD per month, plus other benefits i.e housing, transportation, medical etc. Specialists and consultants make a higher pay with salaries ranging between 2135 and 3200 USD monthly in addition to other benefits. Physicians working for the government enjoy a yearly raise after working for a given period of time; this is usually mentioned in the contract.

Physician salaries in the private sector vary a lot. Factors that could influence this are nationality, expertise, or level of education. G.Ps in the private sector could earn from 1066 to 2500 USD monthly; benefits may or may not be included. The lowest earners usually work in the private clinics and polyclinics. Those who earn more could be found in big hospitals and in insurance companies. The specialists and consultants get even more. They can take home between 2666 and 5333 USD monthly, depending on where they are working. There are even reports of consultants who earn more than 6000 USD per month.

Nursing salaries also vary depending on the nationality and experience. According to some sources, these vary between 500 to 5000 USD per month, with Registered Nurses from the West (North America) apparently getting a higher pay...learn why. Workers from Asia, South Africa, and Nigeria get lower salaries.

And the ladies in the hospitality sector?

This sector offers very attractive salaries, but unfortunately most of the positions at hotels and public institutions are reserved for men. So where will we often find the women working in this sector? You will find them doing housekeeping jobs in hospitals, schools, and in the female branches of banks, female malls, shops and female entertainment areas. One thing for sure is that if you are planning to mop floors, expect between 265 and 535 USD per month. You would land a better deal if you get housing and transportation benefits in addition.

What is life if not work, work and more work. Go sisters, earn the cash and life goes on...

  3. Hi..I read your article and it sounds really interesting.I got married and moved with my husband to KSA recently and I hold an MBA degree with 4 years experience in Logistics. I am offered a job in the "wedding and event planning" sector and I have an interview tomorrow. I was informed that I can start with 7,500 SAR as 2 months probation and might go up to 10,000 SAR. Is this salary range attractive? Please note that I hold Lebanese nationality. Appreciating your immediate response.

  5. Hi, your article shed some light on the questions i've had about working in Saudi Arabia as a dependent spouse. I have a further question regarding the working visa. If i were to be hired by a school will i be issued my own working visa? because on a dependent's visa we are not permitted to work.
I have a bachelors degree majoring in English language but have very limited teachirg experience.I wonder how much i should state as my expected salary.Starting salary for my qualifications back then was $1600.
    Please do help.thanks

  6. Hello Amal. If the school is willing to have you under their sponsorship, they might request for a transfer of sponsorhip. This is a tedious process, which can take up to six months in some cases. On the other hand, they might decide to request a working visa for you, which you will have to pick up in your home country. To the best of my knowledge, some schools (many in fact) hire teachers locally and do not request for a transfer of sponsorhip. This is, however, against the Ministry of Labour regulations because under normal circumstances you have to be under the sponsorhip of your employer. In addition, your "iqama" says you are not allowed to work.
Regarding the salary, many employers offer a starting salary of SR3500 ($933)for applicants with your qualification. I know quite a few schools that offer a starting salary of SR5000 (#1333).
    Good luck!

  8. Hello Ayana. I know it can be very difficult when you are looking for a job in this country especially when you are an expat female. Have you tried local ads and classified websites? I do not work for a recruitment agency, and I can only try to contact a few people on your behalf. Please send a copy of your CV to daprize@allwritingsaudi.com. Let's see whether we can get lucky in hooking something up for you.

    Have a nice day.

  9. Hello, I am a professional teacher of English and have an experience of 9 years of teaching O-levels. Three months ago i shifted to Alkhobar, kindly guide me how to get a job as its hard to kill time her. Moreover, can females give tuitions to students here?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hello. I don't know how life's like in AlKhobar. If you are a professional teacher and you have teaching experience, wouldn't it be helpful if you drop your CV at some local schools? I remember when I first came to Jeddah one of the first things I did was to inquire about schools that were in need of teachers.
The good thing about tutoring is that it is always in demand. You can either place ads (on free classified websites like expatriates.com and dubizzle.com) or ask friends and acquaintances to recommend you to parents and students.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hello Khuteja,

It is usually difficult for a candidate to secure a teaching position at any university in the Kingdom when he or she does not possess a doctoral degree-not in the science field, to the best of my knowledge. If you also had a CELTA, DELTA or an equivalent, you could expect between 1500 and 2000 USD plus benefits. You would get less if you got a teaching position at a school. Starting salaries for teachers who have a bachelor's degree or a higher qualification are usually in the range of 933-1333 USD.

I can't help you get a job. All I can do is forward your CV when I learn of an opening.

    Good luck!

  19. Hello once more. You can start by visiting sites that post job offers in Saudi Arabia; however, to find a school that offers a high starting salary, you need to know someone who is aware of such an opening. Unfortunately, you are new in the Kingdom.

I mentinoed CELTA and DELTA in my last comment, but I forgot to add that this applies to candidates who wish to teach English. I suppose your area of interest is in the sciences. Could you send me an email to clarify? My email address is daprize@allwritingsaudi.com.

  36. Hi I would like to know whether a woman employee in a university can bring her family along with to saudi arabia

    ReplyDelete
  37. No, no matter what they tell you no.

I was given a family contract, family housing, and given all the lies that if you are working for x place it will happen. The Embassy told me that I have to get an iqama before they can come and I have to leave them behind. I went and got my iqama within 3 weeks. I have a doctoral degree too. Then I went to the istighdama office and they said my papers are right but no, no, no it's not allowed. So here I am nearly 3 months without my family, a big place to stay, and my employer says like it or leave it. Well I never came here to leave my family behind, so I am saying leave it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Your case is unusual, Anonymous. I wonder what company offered you a family visa and they do not permit you to bring your family. I do have relatives here who came with a family visa, and they have all the benefits that were mentioned by their employer. Your case is unusual, though not surprising.

I am very sorry for my late response. To answer your question, salaries vary from one institution to the other. They also vary depending on your educational background and experience, so it would be difficult for me to give you a specific response. Could you send me an email (allwritingsaudi@gmail.com) with the name of the school? I'll try to get you something more specific.

  43. There are no set laws. It all depends on your nationality and the clinic / hospital in question where you are looking for a job. Prepare your CV, drop them around and see what the hospital administration would tell you. Some may want to hire you directly without you taking the examination (mind you it depends on your nationality), while others would insist that you take the exam first. To be on a safer side, take the SCFHS exam and have your licence in hand.

As far as I know, most tutors charge per hour. This ranges between 100 and 250 SAR per hour. Some tutors accept 1200 SAR per month (transport not included) to teach all subjects three times per week (duration of 1 hr to 1 hr 30 mins per session). Any tutor can join in to also guide AALI.

    1. Oh, hello. I hope you're doing fine, Fathima.

To be honest, home-based jobs are not easy to come by. If you're a good sales person, you should consider becoming an Avon or Oriflame distributor. Some women claim to make at least 5000 SAR worth of sales each month. Data entry jobs are also good, but these are very scarce. Another option would be to tutor pupils/students.

Plus, nearly every teacher that I know of in Jeddah has at least one student that they are tutoring.

I doubt any college here would hire a lecturer with an MBBS. As far as I know, the minimum requirement is an MSc. Experience and nationality are usually not an issue. 68. Hi MKTJ,

Masha'Allah, you're educated and you have experience in teaching. Plus, you're in a field where it isn't very complicated for women to find a job.

Unfortunately, I can't copy and paste the email addresses of all school admins that are looking for a teacher. You can simply Google Indian Schools in Riyadh, check their websites, and check their location. Experience has shown that you would increase your chances of landing a job if you visited the school directly and dropped your CV. You can get in touch with Jeddah Tutors (https://sa.linkedin.com/in/jeddah-tutors-4229437b). Scroll down for their email address. I know they usually have writing assignments.

    Good luck!

I am Dr. Reshma Kotian from India and I am a qualified dentist with 6 plus years of experience and currently i am pursuing my final semester in MSc Clinical research. I am currently here on visit visa and my husband is on business visa. I wanted to lookout for a good career opportunity especially one where I could get a work permit/Iqama. Is this a possibility? Could you guide me please.

  74. Please send your CV to allwritingsaudi@gmail.com

I can't guarantee a job placement, though, since I'm relying on recruiters. I should also point out that without a bachelor's degree, I'm afraid you might not meet the minimum criterion required by these recruiting agents.

    1. Walakum salam, MKTJ. I'm sorry there's some kind of misunderstanding here. I mentioned that I'm not a recruiter. I can only help forward CVs to my HR friends and relatives who are looking for potential teachers and lecturers. If I didn't respond to your email, then it's probable that I missed it. I do receive tons of emails every day from women like you who are also desperately looking for a job.

      Wish you all the best.

    1. Hello and thank you for visiting. There are very limited opportunities and if you aren't careful you might get scammed. I wrote about some legit online jobs here: http://allwritingsaudi.blogspot.com/2016/07/extra-income-as-a-dependent-expat.html

If you have a home-based activity that you can promote online, you could try http://bit.ly/2bedfeP for FREE and learn how to build a home-based business. But this is only if you have something that you are passionate about and if you wish to have a home-based business. I know of surveys and other paid to click programs, but you wouldn't even earn up to SAR 10 per month (yes, 10 and not SR 100 or 1000) and not $500 as some of these programs typically claim.

  87. Hi Daprize! I'm so glad to find your blog and extremely loving it. I recently came to jeddah and I'm looking for a job. I'm an electrical engineer with an MS degree in educational technologies and have been working in a software house that makes educational apps for iOS and Android devices in my country for around three years. I have quite high grades and world distinctions in my own A level exams specially in ICT so I can hopefully utilize that for teaching. I'm curious about how much shall I expect as a good salary here and which would be the best schools to apply to. Thanks alot!!

    1. Oh, dear! Al Jubail is far off to the east, where I have no acquaintances who might be able to help you. Have you thought of distributing flyers at local shops to market your services? You can have someone translate your advert to Arabic, print it, and leave it with store owners. I think it doesn't hurt to offer a small referral fee for every student that someone refers to you for tuition.
