I can't remember where I saw Fresh Ice Sticks on display, but I can remember my son was like, "Oh Mummy! Buy me one! Buy me One!", to which his dad said "No". At that time, we thought they were just like every other ice sticks that you could find on the market. It wasn't until today when I learned about the contest they were launching that I decided to find out about Freshi Ice Sticks. From what I read in this post, I would like to give it a try. If you haven't tasted Freshi Ice Sticks yet, here is the chance to try it and may be get an additional reward: win an iPad Air.

Haraj, Djeddah : Une mine d'or?

Il était 17 heures, mais il faisait encore très chaud. Le vent soufflait doucement autour de nous, amenant le sable du désert. On pouvait entendre les commercants crier, appelant les clients de venir apprécier leur marchandise. "Wonly 5 Riyals, wonly 5 Riyals», criait un vendeur. On pouvait même voir une veine palpitante de son cou quand il criant de toutes ses forces pour attirer les clients. Je suppose qu'il voulait dire "only 5 riyals" (en français, seulement 5 riyals), mais personne ne semblait s'en soucier. C'était un autre monde - différent de la vision classique dans les centres de Djeddah. C'était Haraj, l'endroit où vous pouvez tout acheter à un prix exceptionnel.

Certaines personnes l'appelent la jungle moderne et j'ai maintenant compris pourquoi. Dans certains endroits, les marchands avaient entassés des vêtements sur le sol : foulards, chemisiers, pantalons, jupes, et chemises étaient tous empilés. D'autres vendeurs avaient affichés leurs marchandises d'une manière différente. Certains vêtements étaient accrochés sur des cintres tandis que d'autres étaient affichés sur des mannequins. Les chaussures étaient disposées en désordre sur le sol et un client devait transpirer pour sélectionner une paire de chaussures de son choix.

Les couverts étaient posés sur les étals mais on aurait cru que ceux-ci avaient été ramassés au fond de l'océan. A première vue, on pourrait se demander si quelqu'un voudrait acheter ses objets et encore moins pour les utilser pendant les repas. Pourtant, les gens se bousculaient pour s'en procurer.

Les produits électroniques étaient exposés d'une façon beaucoup plus ordonnée. Les téléviseurs étaient enveloppés dans des films plastiques transparents et bien agencés sur les étals. Cependant, les écrans plats ne partagaient pas ce luxe, et la plupart étaient placés sur le sol où les clients pouvaient faire leur choix. Bien que la plupart des écrans étaient couverts de poussière et de toiles d'araignée, les marchands rassuraient leurs clients qu'ils étaient comme neufs et n'avaient besoin que d'un simple coup de chiffon pour fonctionner de nouveau.

Haraj est l'endroit idéal pour des gens qui ont de faibles revenus. Vêtements, produits électroniques, meubles, outils, et tout ce que vous ne trouvez pas dans les centres commerciaux, vous pouvez les obtenir ici - et à un très bon prix! Toutefois, avant de s'aventurer là-bas, vous devez être prêt à transpirer pour trouver ce que vous voulez vraiment acheter.

Haraj, Jeddah: The Place to Be?

It was 5 p.m., yet it was still very hot. The wind blew gently around us, carrying the desert sand along with it. You could hear their cries as they called for customers to see their displayed merchandise. “Wonly 5 Riyals, wonly 5 Riyals,” screamed a nearby vendor. You could even see a pulsating vein in his neck as he shouted with all his might to attract customers. I supposed he meant “only 5 Riyals”, but no one seemed to care. This was a different world - different from the classical view in the malls of Jeddah; this was Haraj, the place where you could get any used item at a bargain price. 

Some people called it the modern jungle and I now understood why. In some places, merchants had piled up clothes in heaps: scarfs, blouses, trousers, skirts, and shirts were all piled high. Other merchants displayed their merchandise in a different manner. Some hung clothes on hangers while others displayed them on handmade mannequins. Shoes were thrown on the market floor, and a customer had to sweat through the process of selecting a pair of his or her choice. 

Crockery and cutlery were displayed on stalls, but these seemed to have been picked up from the ocean floor. At first glance, one would wonder whether anyone would want to buy such dirty-looking stuff for use in their homes, let alone for use at the table during meals. Yet, people were scrambling to get their share of the goods. 

Electronic items were displayed in a much more orderly manner. Television sets were wrapped in transparent plastic films and well arranged on stalls. However, flat screens did not share this luxury, and most of them were placed on the market floor, where customers could take their pick. Although most of them were covered in dust and cobwebs, merchants reassured their customers that they were as good as new and needed just a quick wipe to come back to life. 

Haraj is the ideal place to shop for people who have low incomes. Clothes, electronic products, furniture, tools, and anything else that you do not find in the malls, you could get them here – and at a very good price. However, before venturing there, you must be prepared to sweat it out to get what you really wish to purchase.

The Entertainer Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Ever heard of the Entertainer KSA? No? Neither did I, until I met it on a sunny Thursday earlier this month. It came well wrapped in a package, and I couldn't wait to unwrap it. As I was unveiling the still-to-discover Entertainer KSA, I was wondering what was waiting for me inside. The first thing that greeted me was the orange smiley face on the front cover. My next thought was "Oh boy! You are surely going to be interesting!" 


Now what is the Entertainer about? For those of you who are hearing about it for the first time, the Entertainer is a book that offers 2 for 1 incentives at many fine dining restaurants, casual dining restaurants, informal dining, cafes, attractions, spas, beauty salons and fitness centres. There are over 500 buy one get one free vouchers in the book, just the perfect bargain for a family to enjoy and save money at the same time. 


As I went though the book, I discovered much more than I thought. I was delighted to see that my favourite eateries were listed. More so, there were well-known restaurants (including those at first class hotels and resorts), cafes, take-aways and fitness clubs where you could use the vouchers to gain discount. My next questions were, "So how does this work? How do I benefit from the discounts?" That was when I noticed that in my excitement, I had forgotten to read the Intro and the Rules of Use pages. Aha! First, I had to register the book on the Entertainer website. That was done. I had become an Essential Member, and I was entitled to exclusive member benefits and offers. Arabie saoudite : Achats sur Internet?

J'aime faire du shopping. Combien de femmes n'aiment pas le faire? J'aime visiter un centre commercial ou un magasin en particulier quand je veux quelque chose de spécifique. Qui ne voudrait pas toucher le tissu d'un sac ou une robe pour s'assurer que c'est ce qu'il/elle veut vraiment? Ou essayez une paire de chaussures pour voir si elles vont bien? Eh oui! La plupart d'entre nous veulent suivre la voie traditionnelle. 


Il ya certaines choses que je pourrais acheter sur internet sans trop réfléchir. Ce sont les livres et les CD. Si je ne pouvais pas trouver un livre ou un CD à Jarir, Tihama Bookstores ou Obekan, je ne cherchais plus ailleurs. Je me lançais sur internet pour le chercher. Il était hors de question d'acheter des vêtements, bijoux, appareils électroniques ou quoi que ce soit (hormis les livres et CDs) sur internet. 


Un jour quand je surfais sur internet, je suis tombée par hasard sur une boutique qui prétendait être quoi? Le premier club privé de vente en ligne au Moyen-Orient? Je crois. J'ai visité le site et devinez quoi? J'ai aimé ce que j'ai vu, mais je n'ai fait aucun achat parce que j'étais le type traditionnel. Ils avaient un programme de référence, donc je me suis inscrite et j'ai invité une de mes amies Saoudiennes à rejoindre le site. À ma grande surprise, elle était déjà membre et elle achetait des articles sur ce site. C'était une femme Arabe qui aimait aller faire des courses, mais maintenant elle prenait plaisir à acheter des sacs et des bijoux assise devant son ordinateur portable. Plus tard, j'ai rencontré quelques dames qui étaient également membres de ce site, la plupart d'entre elles Saoudiennes. J'étais surprise car il ya tellement de centres commerciaux dans cette ville (Djeddah) que je ne pouvais pas imaginer quelqu'un acheter des choses que vous pourriez trouver partout. Ca, c'était mon coté traditionnel qui me jouait des tours une fois de plus. 


Mon histoire d'amour avec ce site a commencé quand j'ai reçu un courrier électronique dans lequel ils annonçaient un grand solde. C'était en effet un grand solde, avec les prix des produits de marque réduits de plus de 80%. J'étais émerveillée. A cette époque, ma carte de crédit avait expirée et je devais la renouveler. La boutique allait arrêter le solde après environ 24 heures! Je ne pouvais pas résister à la tentation de faire un achat. J'ai appelé mon amie Saoudienne qui a passé la commande pour mon compte. Les produits étaient fabuleux et je ne pouvais pas m'arrêter de parler de leur qualité. 


Vous pourriez être du type traditionnel, mais je serais surprise si vous pouviez résister à la tentation d'acheter certains articles sur ce site surtout si vous êtes celle qui aime les produits de marque. Honnêtement, je ne pensais pas que les femmes Saoudiennes aimaient faire des achats sur internet jusqu'au jour où j'ai rencontré certaines qui ont l'habitude de le faire. Quoi qu'il en soit, il ya encore certaines choses que je préfère acheter dans un centre commercial ou magasin. Je suis vieux jeu. 

Saudi Arabia: Online Shopping?

I love shopping. Which woman doesn't? Most of all, I love to visit a particular mall or store when I have something in mind. Who wouldn't want to feel the fabric of a bag or dress to make sure that it is what they really want? Or try a pair of shoes to see how they look like when they put them on? Yeah, most of us want to go the traditional way.


There are certain things that I could buy online without thinking a lot. These are books and CDs. If I couldn't find a book or CD at Jarir, Tihama Bookstores or Obekan, then that was it. I looked for it online. To me, it was out of question to buy clothes, jewellery, electronic appliances or any other thing online.


One day, I happened to come across an online store that claimed to be what? The first online private shopping club in the Middle East? I think so. I visited the site and guess what? I loved what I saw, but still I didn't bother to make an order because I was the traditional type. They had a referral programme, so I registered and invited one of my Saudi friends to join the site. To my surprise, she was already a member and she seemed to enjoy shopping on this site. This was a Saudi lady who loved to go out shopping, but now she took delight in buying handbags and jewellery sitting in front of her laptop. Later on, I met some ladies who were also members of this site, most of them Saudis. I was surprised because there were so many malls and shops in this city (Jeddah) that I couldn't imagine anyone buying things that could be found everywhere. That was the traditional me. 


My love story with this site began when I received an email from them, notifying me of their big sale. It was indeed a big sale, with the prices of designer products slashed dramatically by more than 80%. I was swept off my feet. At that time, my credit card had expired and had to be renewed. The sale was going to end in about 24 hours! I couldn't resist the temptation, so I called my Saudi friend who placed the order on my behalf. The products were fabulous, and I just couldn't stop talking about them.


You could be the traditional type, but I would be surprised if you could resist buying some items from this site, especially if you are the type who loves designer products. Honestly, I didn't think Saudi ladies fancied shopping online until I met some of them who did so. Whatever be the case, there are still some things I would rather buy at a mall or shop. Same old me.

Jeddah Shopping Centres: My Favourites

Shopping is one of our major activities in Saudi Arabia. Below, you would find a description of my favourite shopping centres in Jeddah.


Aziz Mall


It is one of the biggest malls in the region. Any fashion lover would certainly love its huge collection of clothing and accessories. The mall has over 170 shops including Starbucks, Geant supermarket and Aldo etc


Location: Prince Majed Street, Al Faysaleeyah

Saturday to Tuesday: 9:00am - 1:00am
Wednesday and Thursday: 9:00am - 2:00am
Friday: 12:30pm - 1:00am 


Corniche Commercial Centre


This is a place that I love, especially when I have tight budget to manage. You can get the best deals here; abaya, shoes, jewellery, bags, clothing, gold, watches and electronics. It is even reported to have the best gold shops in Jeddah. 
There is so much activity around this area that sometimes it makes me forget that I am in Saudi Arabia. I especially love to see the crowd, people eating in the open air and those going about their businesses. The only downside is traffic congestion especially in the evenings.


Red Sea Mall Jeddah 


This is another big mall that I love. It has a big water fountain reputed to be the “biggest indoor water fountain” in Saudi Arabia. I remember not being able to take my eyes off it the first time I saw it. This mall is said to have 18 entrances and 4,000 parking spaces. 


Location: On the western side of King Abdul Aziz Road, between the King Abdulaziz International Airport and the Red Sea coast.  


Mall of Arabia Jeddah 


Another giant. The shops have an amazing collection of clothing and accessories. If you are a fashion lover, it would be very hard to resist the temptation of emptying your wallet in its shops. This mall has 16 entrances and 3,000 parking spaces.  It has a  Hyperper Panda Supermarket and a snow rink. It has many stores such as Accesorize, Adidas, Burger King, Kudu, McDonald's, Marks & Spencer, Nike, Nine West, Mothercare, Timberland, Krispy Kreme, Lacoste, MAC Cosmetics, Puma, Samuel & Kevin, Starbucks, Swatch etc.


Location: On the eastern side of Medina Road and south of Makkah Road, near the King Abdulaziz International Airport. 
  
AlTahlia Shopping center


The first time that I visited this shopping centre, I was actually going to buy some books with a Saudi friend and her kids. I discovered that their stores had a luxurious collection of watches, bags and shoes. If you love designer products, then this place is just good for you.
Some shops that you would find are Swarovski, Laura Ashley, Tiffany and Co., Paris Gallery and much more.


Andalus Mall


This is one of the first malls that I visited on my arrival here. There wasn't a month that went by without me visiting this mall. Some of its main facilities are Hyper Panda Supermarket, Centrepoint and Movie Town. Its restaurant is usually crowded on weekends, making it extremely difficult to get a seat. Its entertainment area for kids is really amazing. It has a wide variety of games for kids of all ages. My son never seems to get tired whenever we go there.
You would find stores such as: Accessori, Nine West, Mango, Redtag, Citimax and more.


Location: King Abdul Aziz Square, Al Fayhaa, near King Abdul Aziz University. It is well known to most taxidrivers. All you need to say is "Al Andalus gareeb Al jama'aH," if you do not speak Arabic fluently.


Carrefour


I love to go this mall when I need a quiet place to spend with my family. It is usually not crowded, even on weekends, so there is no seat hunting in the cafes and restaurant. What really attracts me here is Dominos Pizza. They make the tastiest pizzas that I have ever had in my entire existence. Ok, Pizza Hut's are fabulous too. 
This mall has many interesting shops that sell kids' clothing. The entertainment area also has a wide variety of games which your kids would certainly love.


Location: Sulaimania Plaza


IKEA


Whenever I mention IKEA, one of the first things that most people say is "expensive." A connoiseur would say that the prices of their products are worth it. You would get long-lasting furniture of superior quality here. You can save a lot of money if you shop when they offer discounts. I discovered their restaurant only a few months ago. It is self-service and you would be amazed that you pay little for a good meal. You can save a lot here if you are eating out with a group of friends.

Farm Superstores


I love to visit this store especially when they have special offers. You would save a lot on groceries and some household items.


Location: Al Safa Area, Prince Muheb Street. It is adjacent to the famous Abdul Latif Jameel Hosptial. Most drivers would not miss it if you mention this hospital.

Les Centres Commerciaux de Djeddah : Mes favoris

Faire les boutiques c'est l'une de nos distractions principales en Arabie Saoudite. Je vous présente ici, mes centres commerciaux favoris à Djeddah .


Aziz Mall


C'est l'un des plus grands centres commerciaux dans la région. Les amoureux de la mode vont certainement aimer sa vaste collection de vêtements et d'accessoires. Ce centre commercial a plus de 170 magasins, dont Starbucks, Géant supermarché et Aldo etc

Le Centre Commercial de Corniche 

C'est un autre centre commercial que j'aime visiter, surtout quand j'ai un budget serré à gérer. Vous pouvez obtenir les meilleures offres ici; abaya, chaussures, bijoux, sacs, vêtements, l'or, montres et les appareils électroniques. Ses boutiques sont l'une des meilleures dans la vente de l'or à Djeddah.
Il y a tant d'activités autour de cette zone que parfois ça me fait oublier que je suis en Arabie Saoudite. J'aime particulièrement voir la foule, les gens manger en plein air, et ceux qui sont engagés dans leurs activités. Le seul inconvénient c'est l'embouteillage surtout dans la soirée.


Red Sea Mall

C'est un grand centre commercial très intéressant que j'aime. Il est doté d'une grande fontaine d'eau réputée d'être la plus grande en Arabie Saoudite. Je me souviens que j'avais les yeux rivés sur elle la première fois je l'ai vue. Ce centre commercial a 18 entrées et 4,000 places de parking.


Emplacement : Sur le côté ouest de Tariq Malik Abdul Aziz, entre l'aéroport International de Malik Abdul Aziz  et la mer Rouge.


Mall of Arabia


Un autre géant. Ses magasins ont une étonnante collection de vêtements et d'accessoires. Si vous êtes un amoureux de la mode, ce serait très difficile de résister la tentation de vider votre portefeuille dans ses boutiques. Ce centre dispose de 16 entrées et 3,000 places de parking. Elle a un supermarché Hyper Panda et un patinoire. Vous verrez les boutiques telles que Puma, Accesorize, Adidas, Burger King, Kudu, McDonald, Marks & Spencer, Nike, Nine West, Mothercare, Timberland, Krispy Kreme, Lacoste, MAC Cosmetics, Samuel et Kevin, Starbucks, Swatch etc.


Le Centre commercial AlTahlia


La première fois que j'ai visité ce centre commercial, j'y allais juste pour acheter des livres avec une amie Saoudiene et ses enfants. J'ai découvert que ses boutiques avaient des collections de montres, sacs et chaussures de luxe. Si vous aimez les produits de marques, alors ce centre est bon pour vous. 
Ici, vous verrez les boutiques telles que Swarovski, Laura Ashley, Tiffany and Co., Paris Gallery et bien plus encore. 


Andalus Mall 


C'est l'un des premiers centres commerciaux que j'ai visité à mon arrivée à Djeddah. Chaque mois, je visitais ce centre commercial. Certains de ses principaux magazins sont le Supermarché Hyper panda, Centrepoint et Movie Town. Son restaurant est habituellement plein de monde le week-end, jusqu'au point où l'on a du mal a trouver un siège. Sa salle de jeux pour les enfants est vraiment superbe. Il y a une grande variété de jeux pour les enfants de tous les âges. Mon fils ne semble jamais se fatiguer quand on y va. 
Vous trouverez des boutiques telles que: Accessori, Nine West, Mango, RedTag, Citimax et plus. 


Emplacement: Place de Malik Abdul Aziz, Al Fayhaa, près de l'Université Malik Abdul Aziz. Il est bien connu par la plupart des chauffeurs de taxi. Il suffit de dire, ‹‹Al Andalus Gareeb Al Jama'a, si vous ne parlez pas couramment l'Arabe.›› 


Carrefour 


J'aime visiter ce centre commercial quand j'ai besoin de passer une soirée tranquille avec ma famille. Il n'est généralement pas encombré, même le week-end, et on y trouve de la place à s'asseoir facilement dans les restaurants et cafés. Ce qui m'attire vraiment ici c'est Dominos Pizza. Ils font les plus savoureuses pizzas que j'ai dégusté. Bon, les pizzas de Pizza Hut sont fabuleux aussi. 


Ce centre commercial a de nombreuses boutiques intéressantes qui vendent des vêtements pour enfants. La zone de divertissement a également une grande variété de jeux que vos enfants vont certainement aimer.

IKEA 


Chaque fois que je fais mention d'IKEA, l'une des premières choses que la plupart des gens disent, c'est «cher». Un expert, dira que le prix de leurs produits en valent la peine. Vous pouvez obtenir des meubles solides et de qualité supérieure à IKEA. Vous pouvez économiser beaucoup d'argent lorsque vous visitez quand ils offrent des rabais. J'ai découvert leur restaurant récemment. C'est un restaurant self-service et vous seriez surpris que vous payez peu pour un bon repas. Vous pouvez économiser beaucoup ici si vous mangez avec un groupe d'amis.

J'aime visiter ce magasin en particulier quand ils ont des offres spéciales. Vous économiserez beaucoup sur les produits alimentaires et ménagers. 


Emplacement : Espace Al Safa, rue Prince Muheb, près du célèbre hôpital Abdul Latif Jameel. La plupart des chauffeurs de taxi ne le manqueront pas si vous citez cet hôpital.
